Battle of the Books

Wednesday May 6th, 2026 at Rouge Park P.S.

In partnership with the Markham Public Library System and Teacher Librarians, we are proud to sponsor this unique educational event with 10 elementary schools participating together in friendly competition this year. We have supported this initiative since 1993. The Battle of the Books program was developed to stimulate enjoyment of recreational reading by encouraging students to read widely in authors they already enjoy and to discover new authors recommended by students, teachers and parents. All grade 4, 5, and 6 students are invited to form teams, first at their school level, and then in our Community Final. Students begin reading in September. Their teachers perform a crucial role, volunteering to spend their free time facilitating quality discussions with students about the books they read.

In 2026, we offer our congratulations to students and staff at Henderson Avenue PS for winning First Place, Rouge Park PS for Second Place, and Parkview PS for Third Place, as well as all those who participated with such enthusiasm.

Winning schools are presented with a plaque and gift cards to Chapters.

A trophy with the winning school’s name that is displayed at the MPL Markham branch as well as medallions for each member of the winning team.
